Schmalz is recognized as one of “Germany’s Best Employers” for the third time

The employees of J. Schmalz GmbH in Glatten had every reason to celebrate. The reason: they work for one of “Germany’s Best Employers 2012.” This has been published in a ranking by the “Great Place to Work Institute Deutschland”. The company achieved an excellent position in the top 50 in the “Companies with 50 to 500 employees” category. This is the third time, after 2004 and 2009, that Schmalz has placed above-average in this competition. The vacuum technology specialist employs about 650 people around the world; approximately 470 of these are at its primary location in Glatten in the district of Freudenstadt (Black Forest).


As part of the “Great Place to Work” award companies were assessed in terms of quality and attractiveness as employers.

The company puts particular emphasis on training young people. Schmalz is currently educating 60 trainees and cooperative state university students. Schmalz’s trainee quota of 13 percent is significantly higher than average for Germany. “Qualified specialists and managers are a basic requirement for long-term success. Doing our own training is part of our company philosophy. About 30% of our employees were trained at Schmalz,” explains Managing Director Dr. Kurt Schmalz. “Our attractiveness as an employer and our economic success ensure low employee turnover and a good working atmosphere.”

Schmalz is also a popular employer due to special measures in HR management. Along with fair pay and health-based and performance-based bonuses, Schmalz also has a profit-sharing plan for employees. Additionally, all important decisions are made together with the employee council. For these reasons, Schmalz received the Axia Award in 2010 for outstanding HR management. “We are committed to a trusting, cooperative relationship with our employees, to open communication, and to extensive training and continuing education,” says Wolfgang Schmalz, who is also a Managing Director.

As part of the “Great Place to Work” award, more than 400 companies of varying sizes from all branches and regions were assessed in terms of quality and attractiveness as employers. The evaluation of these companies and their management was performed on the basis of an anonymous employee survey about topics such as trustworthiness, respect, fairness, pride, and team orientation as well as an additional culture audit with the Human Resources departments. More than 100,000 employees answered questions about management, cooperation, professional development, salary, and general satisfaction with their workplaces. The quality of the measures and programs in the HR department was also examined in detail at each participating company. “That is an impressive result and a valuable award for us because the Great Place to Work Institute is a renowned organization that carries out these studies around the world,” says Wolfgang Schmalz. “The only employees who were surveyed were those who work at companies with outstanding human resources departments. This shows that we are an attractive company and that we employ highly motivated people.”
