New magnetic gripper series SGM

19.01.2009

Regardless of whether they are used alone or in combination with vacuum grippers, the magnetic grippers SGM from Schmalz – available in four sizes and with holding forces from 35 to 290 N – offer new possibilities for the implementation of individual gripper systems.

What do vacuum components have to do with magnetic grippers? Basically, quite a lot, since it is beneficial to avoid accepting compromises when designing gripper systems for the handling of sheets and parts made of steel or other ferromagnetic materials. In addition to their main products suction pads, the vacuum and handling specialists J. Schmalz GmbH also develop and design handling systems for sheet-metal parts. Thus they supply each customer with optimal solutions from a single source while customers can thus reduce their non-productive idle times by safe gripping and by more dynamic handling.

Handling of sheet-metal parts with drilled holes and apertures

Regardless of whether magnetic grippers are used on their own or in combination with suction pads − safe gripping, precise and reproducible positioning are of extreme importance in the handling of perforated metal sheets, sheet-metal parts with drilled holes and apertures, cut parts with complex shapes or pressed sheet-metal parts. Schmalz offers magnetic grippers in the four sizes SGM 30, SGM 40, SGM 50 and SGM 70. The smallest one weighs 130 grams and the largest 715 grams. The friction surface of the gripper, which is placed on the workpiece and permits high transverse forces, is clipped to the magnetic gripper. This means that it can be replaced quickly and easily when it becomes worn. Since the magnetic grippers are bistable devices, they can retain the functions "Grip" and "Release" even if the external power supply fails.

Compact, lightweight design with integrated permanent magnet

The new SGM series of magnetic grippers in the sizes SGM 30, SGM 40, SGM 50 and SGM 70

With its aluminium body and its integrated permanent magnet, the magnetic gripper is light, compact and robust. It can be mounted in any desired orientation: a standard connection thread is provided in the cover of the magnetic gripper and additional mounting holes for all common holder systems are provided on three sides. In spite of its compact design, the magnetic gripper provides very high holding forces. These can be increased by mounting the grippers side-by-side, for example when it comes to handling long workpieces. The magnetic grippers can be switched on and off by means of pneumatic valves or by a combination of pressure and vacuum, which requires a pressure between 3.5 and 6 bar or a vacuum of -0.6 bar. No electric power is needed. Gripping with magnets or with a combination of vacuum and magnets permits high holding forces and transverse forces, and thus very dynamic handling – something which is important for the handling of sheet-metal parts in many sectors of industry.
