Holds up its end of the bargain – the new suction pad for flexible-form product packaging
30.07.2010
In automated packaging processes, the gripper used must meet high demands for process reliability and speed. This is especially the case when handling flexible-form packaging with liquid or powdery contents.

Automated handling of flexible-form product packaging is one of the biggest challenges in handling technology. On one hand, this is due to the broad spectrum of different designs and materials for bag packaging. On the other hand, this is also due to the combination of non-rigid packaging and loose contents that must be separated and picked at high speeds.
J. Schmalz GmbH – the specialist in vacuum technology – is meeting this challenge with a pad solution containing 4.5 corrugations and intelligent design details: The new SPB4 suction pad series allows the reliable handling of formable product packaging in extremely dynamic processes of up to 100 cycles/minute.
Well-proven in demanding multi-shift operation

The series uses food-safe SI silicone and conforms to FDA guidelines. The extremely adaptable sealing lip of the suction pad with integrated flow vanes ensures optimal sealing and secure handling of the bag packaging.
In dynamic handling processes, lateral forces are absorbed and slipping of the suction pad is avoided. An integrated joint in the pad compensates for unevenness and the momentum of the bag packaging, thus ensuring increased hold and stability. The roughened surface of the corrugations ensures additional process reliability and prevents the feared “adhesive effect,” even when the bellows are fully compressed.
Standardization saves time and reduces costs
SPB4 suction pads are available in three sizes (20, 30 and 40 mm), and can be used in toploader, multi-pack, blister packaging or Form & Seal systems. Assembly is simple – either using a pad nipple or by connecting directly to the standard 3/8" or 1/2" pipe. Whether configured as a stand-alone solution or a customer-specific gripper system, SPB4 suction pads are able to handle a wide range of different flexible packaging dynamically and with high levels of process reliability.
