New large-area gripper system FXC/FMC-HD for flexible handling

Vacuum specialist J. Schmalz GmbH has designed an innovative large-area gripper especially for handling wooden parts, such as timber, moulding, profiles, etc. It comes with either an integrated pneumatic vacuum generator (FXC-HD large-area gripper) or an external vacuum generator (FMC-HD large-area gripper). Both gripper versions are fully equipped and can be attached to robots or portal systems immediately.

The FXC-HD/FMC-HD large-area gripper is suitable for the following applications:

FXC-HD vacuum large-area gripper system for flexible, energy-efficient handling

  • Handling wooden and plastic parts with a wide range of dimensions in undefined positions

  • Handling work pieces with gaps and various contours

  • Automated palletising/depalletising of blanks, flat products, components and furniture elements

  • Sorting and picking windows, doors, and furniture parts

  • Handling layers of profile strips

  • Handling large individual workpieces

The FXC-HD/FMC-HD large-area gripper features robust construction and includes the following elements:

The FXC-HD large-area vacuum gripper handling a layer of profile strips

  • Main body made of extruded aluminium section with integrated valve technology

  • Vacuum manometer

  • End cover with function module for the “sensor” and “blow-off” connections

  • Sliding block strip for flexible, mechanical attachment of the gripper

  • Rugged, quick-replace sealing mat

The sealing mat has various grid patterns that make it suitable for use with differing widths of workpieces. It is optionally available with an integrated, self-cleaning filter screen mat that protects the gripper from soiling.

The gripper’s design also takes energy-efficiency and cost-efficiency into account:

  • The gripper’s interior chamber is optimised for a small evacuation volume. Not only does this reduce the amount of compressed air that is used, resulting in lower operating costs: reduced CO2 emissions make it better for the environment.

  • Because the chambers and check valves for the suction and blow-off functions are separate, items can be set down quickly, using less power. This shortens handling cycle times. Handling processes can by executed dynamically, as quickly as possible, using energy efficiently.
