The “Münster Osnabrück International Airport” (FMO) was founded in 1966 by the cities of Münster, Osnabrück, Greven, and the counties of Münster, Tecklenburg and Steinfurt. During more than 40 years that have passed, the number of passengers at this international commercial airport has risen to over 1.39 million (as of 2009). The large service area of over six million people, which is formed by Münsterland, the northern part of the Ruhr region, the southwest of Lower Saxony, and parts of the Netherlands, is an important prerequisite for further development.

Ground handling (unloading pieces of baggage) at the “Münster Osnabrück International Airport” used to be performed by hand. This work demanded an enormous physical effort on the part of the employees. Suitcases weighing as much as 30 kg are routed along a conveyor belt to the specific chute that is defined for a given flight number. The pieces of baggage are then placed onto the apron trolley or transport trolley by an employee. From there the pieces of baggage are brought to the airplanes. The Schmalz company was confronted with the requirements of the workload, the low room height, and different types of baggage, such as trolleys, hard-shell suitcases, and sports bags.

The vacuum tube lifter JumboFlex is ideal for frequent, very fast movement of lightweight goods (up to 35 kg). Its numerous features provide crucial advantages for handling passenger baggage and special baggage. The vacuum tube lifter’s ergonomic, single-hand operation simplifies the work to be done by one person, without endangering the employee’s health. The 2-in-1 gripper has a simple rotating mechanism that allows the user to switch from the vacuum baggage gripper to a mechanical single-hook head for pieces of baggage that cannot be held using suction. A special crane system with a crane length of 6,000 mm rounds off this complete solution. It ensures perfect low-friction operation, is optimally geared for low room heights, and is the perfect complement to the vacuum tube lifter JumboFlex.
