- Handling of baggage with the vacuum tube lifter Jumbo Flex
“Franz Josef Strauß” Airport in Munich was opened in 1992. Following Frankfurt am Main Airport, it is the second-largest aviation hub in Germany. Further growth is planned, thanks to the large catchment area and the ideal rail and road connections. By the end of 2008, Munich Airport had a slot capacity of 90 aircraft movements per hour and a terminal capacity of 50 million passengers every year.
In Terminal 1 of “Franz Josef Strauß” Airport in Munich, pieces of baggage weighing up to 35 kg are transported to defined loading stations using a modern order picking and distribution system. Because over half of these pieces of baggage weigh between 15 and 20 kg, the use of a lifting aid is unavoidable from the standpoint of an ergonomic working method for the employees. Loading and unloading at the distribution points used to require extreme physical effort from employees. The pieces of baggage must be placed on the apron trolley or transport trolley. From there, they are brought to the airplanes. In addition to the workload of the employees, the European Union’s newly planned and stricter occupational health and safety regulations, to be implemented in the future, were a reason why Munich Airport showed interest in a lifting aid.
The vacuum tube lifter JumboFlex is ideal for moving light goods weighing up to 35 kg frequently and very rapidly. The SRC radio control that is used increases productivity and is a worthwhile investment for reducing energy costs. It allows the operator to switch the pump on and off directly at the operating unit. The tube lifter’s ergonomic, single-handed operation lets the employees perform their work easily, without endangering their health. The 2-in-1 gripper has a simple rotating mechanism that allows the user to switch from the vacuum baggage gripper to a mechanical single-hook head for pieces of baggage that cannot be held using suction.
The handling system is rounded off by a Schmalz SK column-mounted slewing crane with an aluminum crane rail. This crane is characterized by extreme ease of movement. With a swivel angle of at least 180°, the available work area can be used most effectively. Schmalz cranes can be individually adapted to the conditions, and they complete this application perfectly.
